SAVAGE 23 APPLICATION

SAVAGE 23 is a narrative filmmaking movement created by A Bunch of Savages, not only challenging artists to focus on simple, grounded storytelling -- stripped of all the frivolous waste of contemporary cinema. But also to uplift Filipino-American cinema.

For this second edition, ABOS and Executive Producer Chris Quintos Cathcart are awarding a $7500 production grant for the most innovative film interpretation of this audio clip:

ABOS will carefully review each submission and evaluate them based on creativity, storytelling, originality, and relevance to the Filipino American Narrative. Additionally, a guest producer of Fil-Am Prominence will join the judging panel and enrich the selection process.

No one comes up alone, so we're encouraging writer/director/producer teams to apply together. The winning team will work alongside ABOS to produce the film through December, in time for a special event screening in late January 2025.

SAVAGE23 Rules:

All films produced under the Savage 23 movement must have a Filipino main character.
No CGI may be used in any part of the film's production.
All filming must take place on location, no use of sound stages or sets
Dialogue must include Tagalog or any Philippine language in any form or length.
Improvisation is encouraged to tap into the raw emotion and authenticity of the actors.
All films must be shot in digital format.
Sound must be recorded live on set or location, with no post-dubbing allowed.
The film's overall budget must be limited to the bare essentials, and the final cut should not exceed 20 minutes.

Are submissions limited to 1 project per applicant?

Nope! Shoot your shot – or 15.

Do I have to be Filipino?

Nah, but you do have to be able to authentically tell a Filipino-led story.

How do I send a downloadable link?

There are hella file-sharing sites out there. Upload your script pdf to Dropbox, Google Drive etc., and share that link with us.

What do I need to submit for consideration?

At the minimum, a short script. If you’re really tryna hustle, you’re welcome to send a treatment and more.

When are you planning to announce the winner?
We’re planning to announce the winner on the last week of November, but are hoping to inform the winner sooner. Knowing the quick turnaround time, our plan is to be as helpful to the production process as possible.
