Photos don’t do justice to the amount of pride we have for our first ever Savage 23 event and the screening of @kvillanz “Buzz Cut.”
Savage 23 is something we cooked up as a small dream, not even sure how we could pull off. But a couple of dreamers fought hard and worked tirelessly to not only bring a film to life, but to impact real change in our community with the hopes of giving more access and allowing for more diverse voices to be heard from here on out.
And we thank each and every person who came out and supported us — filling every seat of the beautiful Ahmanson auditorium @artcenteredu on a Friday night in Pasadena!
Of course a special thanks to not only @artcenteredu x @artcenterfilm x @artcenterdei for teaming up with us for this event, but also @chrisqchrisq for the unlimited support and partnership, @pablo.banuelos, Vivian and @sirtaj for allowing us to screen ur wonderful films along ours, all those who shared their creativity with us and submitted to Savage 23, @redgaskell for working tirelessly to document the whole thing and any and everyone who spread the word, took part in some capacity and simply believed in folks like us, doing it for the people.

Following up our winner, we wanted to show love to our other two finalists.
In our inaugural year of #Savage23, we received an overwhelming number of submissions and it was tough enough to narrow it down to the top 3, let alone choose the one.
So special shoutout to Jill Janairo’s “Vic and His Nanay” and Francisco Castro’s “Reborn” for making the finals and taking SAVAGE 23 to such great heights.
Again thank you to everyone who applied. The incredible response to the competition is a true testament to the amount of creative talent waiting to be tapped.

We are beyond excited to announce Kiersten Villanueva’s (@kvillanz ) “Buzz Cut” as the inaugural winner of A Bunch of Savages annual: SAVAGE 23.
We had an unbelievable amount of submissions and making this decision was nearly impossible but Villanueva’s BUZZ CUT rose to the top because of its creativity, vision, and Savage 23 simplicity in telling a core fil-am story.
Stay tuned and follow the journey of the BUZZ CUT’s making as we document and guide Kiersten through the process until the film’s premiere on October 27th.
Kiersten Villanueva is a Filipino-American independent filmmaker born and raised in the Bay Area. Through his time earning a BFA at Chapman University, his short film Shabu was featured in several notable film festivals, including Asian World Film Festival, Glendale l International Film Festival, Chicago South Asian Film Festival, and Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival. Kiersten currently lives in Los Angeles where he works as a Writer’s PA on CBS’ show So Help Me Todd.
